If you’re looking for something fun, exciting, and educational to do this weekend on Jekyll Island, then you should have no trouble filling up your itinerary. The Jekyll Island Turtle Crawl and NestFest kicks off this Friday, May 15th, with events that mark the official beginning of this year’s sea turtle season across the Atlantic coast’s Golden Isles. The annual Turtle Crawl Triathlon is just one event being held this weekend, with races designed to accommodate all ages and levels of runners, from triathletes and serious competitors to casual 5K’ers and weekend racers.
Another exciting event taking place on Jekyll Island beginning this Saturday, May 16th is NestFest. NestFest will be held Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the newly constructed Jekyll Island Beach Village (located between the Westin hotel and the convention center), and will feature live music, fun activities for kids of all ages, and the main attraction: a sea turtle release on the beach, moderated by the Jekyll Island Sea Turtle Center. The exact time of the release is not specified, but has been confirmed to take place between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. per the NestFest Facebook page. For up-to-the-minute information on NestFest, you can check out their Facebook page by clicking here.
If you’re going to run a race, we can’t imagine a better setting than the sandy beaches of Jekyll Island’s shoreline. With the sun rising over the Atlantic at 6:31 a.m. ET this Saturday, and with temperatures expected to be in the low 70s through the morning hours, conditions should be ripe for a memorable, enjoyable run. That is, if you’ve been training. If running’s not your forte, then you can opt to watch the race from the sidelines, enjoy the festivities, and bring your long lens so you’ll be sure to get some great shots of this year’s sea turtle release into the wild.
