While thoughts of December usually trigger images of sweater-bound people bundled up in their homes and nestled closely to a crackling fire, that type of behavior in St. Marys this winter would have resulted in a few heat strokes.
That’s because while most of the United States is shoveling snow or dodging near-freezing raindrops this time of year, the weather in St. Marys couldn’t be better. Temperatures flirted with 70 degrees on Christmas Day, with nightly lows bottoming out in the mid-50s throughout the week.
Winter weather along the Southeastern Georgia coast can be pretty unpredictable: last year Christmas Day warranted a high of 50 degrees, a solid 20 degrees below this year’s temperature, and closer to the historical average of 54 degrees. Record temps range from 11 degrees fahrenheit in 1983 to 81 degrees the following year in 1984, so what Christmas weather is going to entail from year to year in St. Marys is anyone’s guess.
At any rate, we decided to take full advantage of a beautiful day post-Christmas celebrations by taking the bikes through the downtown area of St. Marys this afternoon. I brought the new GoPro along for the ride and compiled a brief two-minute clip of the downtown area from Seagles Saloon to St. Marys Waterfront Park.
